Johannes Pietsch: The Classical-Pop Prodigy Who Redefined Eurovision

In the shifting landscape of modern pop music, rare artists manage to bridge the gap between high art and mainstream radio. Johannes Pietsch, widely known by his stage name JJ, stands out as a defining example. As an Austrian singer and songwriter who effortlessly blends soaring operatic drama with infectious pop hooks, Pietsch captured international attention by winning the Eurovision Song Contest in 2025. In doing so, he shattered records, charmed millions, and carved out a unique space for classical crossover music in the 21st century.

Early Life and Global Roots

Born on April 29, 2001, in Vienna, Austria, Johannes Pietsch grew up in a multicultural household. His father, an Austrian IT specialist, introduced him to the structured, emotive world of classical opera, while his Filipino mother introduced him to the vibrant energy of family karaoke gatherings.

Pietsch spent the majority of his childhood living in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. This diverse upbringing not only gave him a broad global perspective but also shaped his linguistic and musical versatility. He became multilingual—fluent in German, English, and Tagalog—while absorbing vastly different musical traditions. In 2016, his family returned to his birthplace of Vienna, where he immersed himself entirely in formal music education, attending the prestigious opera school of the Vienna State Opera and later the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna.

Building a Career on International Stages

Before his meteoric rise to fame, Pietsch cut his teeth in the competitive world of televised singing contests. In 2020, after missing the application deadline for The Voice of Germany, he tried his luck across the English Channel on the ninth series of The Voice UK. His unique vocal stylings impressed coach will.i.am, under whose guidance Pietsch advanced all the way to the Knockout rounds.

The following year, he returned to his home country to compete in the fifth season of the popular Austrian television show Starmania, successfully reaching the first final show. These foundational television appearances helped hone his stage presence, preparing him for the biggest platform of his life.

The Historic Eurovision Victory

The defining moment of Pietsch’s career arrived in early 2025. On January 30, the Austrian broadcaster ORF announced that JJ would represent Austria at the 69th Eurovision Song Contest with the song “Wasted Love”, a track he co-wrote alongside Teodora Špirić and music producer Thomas Thurner.

When Pietsch took to the Eurovision stage, his breathtaking performance captivated Europe. On May 17, 2025, he clinched a historic victory in the Grand Final with a commanding total of 436 points (dominating the jury vote with 258 points and securing 178 points from the televote). The win was groundbreaking on multiple fronts: Pietsch became the first solo Eurovision winner born in the 21st century, as well as the first champion of Southeast Asian descent.

Artistic Style and Legacy

Pietsch performs as a sopranist—a rare male soprano countertenor classification with a vocal range that scales dizzying heights. Rather than treating opera and pop as opposing forces, he fuses them together, utilizing an intense, theatrical interpretation that breathes fresh life into contemporary pop music.

Following his Eurovision triumph, his momentum has only accelerated. He picked up fan-voted accolades at the Eurovision Awards—including Outstanding Vocals and Album Cover of the Year for his viral collaboration mashup with Conchita Wurst—and embarked on promotional tours while releasing fresh music.

Beyond his vocal acrobatics, Pietsch has used his platform to advocate for communities close to his heart. Openly queer, he has expressed a strong desire to serve as a voice and role model for the queer community in Austria. Balancing classical rigor with modern pop appeal, Johannes Pietsch continues to prove that boundary-pushing artistry will always find a receptive audience.
