The Rise and Star Power of Song Kang
When talking about the modern wave of Hallyu stars taking over global screens, few names spark as much excitement as Song Kang. Often affectionately dubbed the “Son of Netflix” due to his massive breakout roles on the streaming giant, Song Kang has captured the hearts of millions worldwide with his undeniable charisma, striking visuals, and impressive versatility as an actor.
From Roots to Stardom: Who is Song Kang?
Born on April 23, 1994 (“sinh năm 1994”), in Suwon, South Korea, Song Kang grew up with an appreciation for the arts, influenced in part by his family background. Before stepping into the spotlight, he studied Film Arts at Konkuk University.
Interestingly, before officially making his acting debut, his tall stature and handsome features caught the attention of talent scouts, leading to multiple offers to train as a K-pop idol. However, Song Kang turned them down, choosing to stay true to his ultimate dream of becoming a dramatic actor.
He officially stepped into the entertainment industry in 2017 with a supporting role in the romantic comedy series The Liar and His Lover. From there, he steadily built his resume by taking on diverse variety show gigs—such as hosting the music program Inkigayo—while waiting for his major breakthrough.
The “Son of Netflix” Era and Critical Acclaim
Song Kang’s career skyrocketed when he beat out massive competition to land the lead role of Hwang Sun-oh in the hit webtoon-adapted series Love Alarm (2019). The show became a massive regional hit, turning him into an overnight sensation.
Rather than getting typecast in purely romantic roles, Song Kang quickly proved his range by diving into darker, more physical genres:
- Sweet Home (2020): He starred as Cha Hyun-soo, a troubled, solitary teenager fighting for survival in a world overrun by terrifying monsters. The role showcased a gritty, intense side of his acting abilities.
- Navillera (2021): Proving his dedication to his craft, Song Kang trained extensively in ballet for months to play a gifted yet struggling ballerino, delivering an emotionally resonant performance that won widespread critical praise.
- Nevertheless (2021) & Forecasting Love and Weather (2022): He returned to the romance genre, exploring complex modern relationships and cementing his status as a premier K-drama romantic lead.
- My Demon (2023): Starring alongside Kim Yoo-jung, he played a centuries-old demon who loses his powers, a role that won him top accolades at the SBS Drama Awards, including the Top Excellence Award and Best Couple Award.
Dedication and What’s Next
Beyond his acting talent, Song Kang is known for his incredible work ethic. Whether he is packing on muscle or shedding weight drastically for a specific character, or learning entirely new physical skills like ballet and kendo, he continuously pushes his boundaries.
