The 2023 biographical thriller Tetris defies expectations by turning what could have been a mundane corporate history into a high-stakes Cold War espionage caper. Directed by Jon S. Baird and starring Taron Egerton, the film chronicles how a simple, addictive puzzle game created behind the Iron Curtain became a global phenomenon.
The Discovery and the Licensing Web
The plot kicks off in 1988 when Dutch-American video game designer and entrepreneur Henk Rogers (Egerton) encounters Tetris at a Las Vegas trade show. Instantly mesmerized by its geometric genius, Rogers realizes the game has massive potential—particularly as the killer app for Nintendo’s upcoming handheld console, the Game Boy.
However, securing the rights is a legal labyrinth. Unknown to Rogers, the rights have already been fractured and double-sold across different platforms and territories due to a web of chaotic international agreements. Media mogul Robert Maxwell and his son Kevin, operating through their company Mirrorsoft, are aggressively trying to lock down global control, while Nintendo desperately needs the handheld rights to secure its hardware launch.
To save his company and seize the opportunity, Rogers gambles everything—including mortgaging his family’s livelihood—and flies straight into the lion’s den: Moscow.
Journey into the USSR and Cold War Paranoia
Arriving in the Soviet Union during the twilight of the Cold War, Rogers finds himself trapped in a bureaucratic nightmare managed by ELORG (the state-run software licensing agency) and watched closely by the KGB.
In Moscow, Rogers tracks down the game’s brilliant creator, Alexey Pajitnov (Nikita Efremov). Despite deep initial suspicion and the constant threat of surveillance, the two men forge a genuine, cross-cultural friendship over their shared love for creation. Pajitnov explains the grim reality of working under a communist regime that owns his intellectual property, preventing him from ever seeing proper royalties or recognition.
The Climax: A Race Against Time and the KGB
As the narrative escalates, the corporate battle morphs into a literal fight for survival. The Maxwells attempt to use political leverage, bribes, and heavy-handed threats to force ELORG into handing over the rights, while corrupt Soviet officials view the game as a high-stakes geopolitical bargaining chip.
Rogers, Pajitnov, and their allies must outmaneuver double-dealing bureaucrats and dangerous operatives. The tension peaks in a cinematic race to get out of the Soviet Union with the legal contracts signed and secured before the regime collapses or cracks down entirely. Through a combination of bold negotiation, last-minute dashes, and sheer defiance, Rogers succeeds in securing the rights for Nintendo, setting the stage for the Game Boy to conquer the world.
Resolution
The film concludes on an uplifting, triumphant note. Tetris launches in the West to unprecedented, historic success. Years later, following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Rogers manages to help Pajitnov emigrate to the United States. The epilogue reveals that the two friends finally founded The Tetris Company together, ensuring that the humble Russian programmer finally achieved financial freedom and global credit for the block-dropping puzzle masterwork that changed gaming forever.
