How to Add Your Own Music to Spotify: Two Ways to Do It
Want to hear your own music on Spotify? Depending on what you mean, there are two completely different paths you can take.
If you are a music creator or independent artist looking to publish your tracks officially so anyone in the world can stream them, you will need a music distributor. However, if you just want to listen to unreleased tracks, rare remixes, or personal audio files on your own devices through the Spotify app, you can use Spotify’s built-in Local Files feature.
Here is a complete, step-by-step guide to both methods.
Method 1: The Personal Route (Listening to Your Own Audio Files)
Best for: Sound files, unreleased demos, live recordings, or rare tracks you already have downloaded on your computer.
Spotify lets you import audio files stored locally on your desktop and sync them directly to your phone or tablet.
Step 1: Enable Local Files on Desktop
- Open the Spotify desktop app on your Mac or PC.
- Click your profile picture in the top-right corner and select Settings.
- Scroll down until you find Your Library, and toggle on Show Local Files.
- Click Add a Source to select the folder on your computer where your music files are kept (such as your Downloads or Music folder).
Step 2: Add the Music to a Playlist
- In the left-hand sidebar of Spotify, look for a new folder in your library named Local Files.
- Open it to view all the compatible audio tracks Spotify detected from your selected folder.
- Create a new playlist specifically for your custom music, and add the tracks from your Local Files folder into that playlist.
Step 3: Sync to Your Phone (iOS / Android)
Because Spotify doesn’t cloud-upload personal MP3s, syncing them to your mobile device requires a quick connection over your local network:
- Make sure your phone and your computer are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
- On your phone, go to Settings and privacy > Apps and devices, and toggle on Local audio files (on iOS, grant media access permissions when prompted).
- Open the playlist containing your local songs on your phone and tap the Download button.
- The files will download directly from your computer to your phone over your local network, allowing you to listen anywhere.
Note on Formats: Spotify supports standard formats like .mp3, .mp4, and .m4p. Formats like FLAC or Apple Lossless (.m4a) won’t natively display unless converted first.
Method 2: The Professional Route (Releasing Music as an Artist)
Best for: Original tracks, professional production, and building an official artist profile.
Spotify does not accept direct audio uploads from individual artists. Even if you have a verified Spotify for Artists account, you cannot upload audio files through it. Instead, you must use a digital music distributor.
