Is Vikas Divyakirti an IAS Officer? The Real Story Behind the Famous Educator
When people begin researching the UPSC Civil Services Examination—India’s toughest competitive exam—one name that almost always surfaces is Dr. Vikas Divyakirti. Known for his calm demeanor, deep intellectual depth, and viral lecture clips, he is idolized by millions of aspirants.
Because he is widely referred to as an expert guide for future bureaucrats, a common question pops up: Is Vikas Divyakirti an IAS officer?
The short answer is no, he is not an IAS officer. However, his relationship with India’s civil services is uniquely intertwined. Here is the full story of his background, his actual brush with the UPSC, and how he became one of India’s most influential educators.
1. Did He Clear the UPSC Exam?
Yes, he did—and on his very first attempt!
In 1996, at just 23 years old, Vikas Divyakirti sat for the prestigious Civil Services Examination and secured an All India Rank (AIR) of 384.
Passing the UPSC exam qualifies a candidate for various elite government services (such as the IAS, IPS, IFS, etc., depending on rank and vacancies). With his rank, he was allotted to the Central Secretariat Service (CSS) of the Government of India. He joined as a Section Officer in the Department of Official Language under the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Therefore, while he did clear the exam and briefly serve as a government officer, he was never an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer.
2. Why Did He Leave Government Service?
Civil service positions in India are traditionally viewed as the ultimate career goal, offering immense job security, prestige, and power. So, why would someone walk away from it?
After working in the Ministry of Home Affairs for roughly a year, Dr. Divyakirti realized that his true calling lay elsewhere. He felt a deep pull toward teaching, academic discourse, and mentoring young minds. Choosing passion over a secure bureaucratic career, he made the bold decision to resign from his government post.
He returned to academia, pursuing extensive higher education at the University of Delhi. He eventually earned multiple degrees, including an M.Phil and a Ph.D. in Hindi Literature, alongside degrees in sociology, law, and mass communication.
3. The Birth of Drishti IAS
In 1999, Dr. Divyakirti laid the foundation for what would become a household name in India’s education sector: Drishti IAS.
Starting out in a modest classroom in Mukherjee Nagar, Delhi, with just a handful of students, his primary mission was to bridge a major gap in the coaching ecosystem. At the time, serious resources and high-end coaching were heavily skewed toward English-medium applicants. Dr. Divyakirti wanted to create a level playing field for Hindi-medium students, giving them conceptual clarity and equal opportunity to crack the UPSC exam.
